voice

Narrative voice (when it is third person) is a very important aspect of fictional prose.

Its primary purpose is to tell the reader what exactly is going on from an objective standpoint, communicating the scene with only as much detail is as necessary. And that's difficult enough to accomplish without either burdening the reader with too much information (over-description) or by being too simplistic (not answering enough vital questions, leaving gaps).

The voice of the narrative is the most direct the author may be with the reader. By giving the narration itself a character, though (either by accident or on purpose) is risky business. A voice gives everything a specific spin or a delivery to an otherwise straightforward narration. Because of this you may either reel in your audience or push them away.

Best to keep that in mind, comrades.

I usually preferred the "Plain Style" (coined from the character Dunstan Ramsey from Robertson Davies' Fifth Business) myself, with some exceptions as to when a character seems to hijack the narration for himself.

I think it's important for people to experiment with narrative voice and to be aware of what voice he or she is most comfortable.

As I understand it, many of you have received a Private Message from a member on our site calling themselves ‘Alayel’. For those of you fortunate enough not to have been contacted by this member, the following may or may not concern you.

It seems one can never truly shake off one’s past, and this is no exception. Way back, nigh on 4 years in fact, ‘Alayel’ and I created a roleplaying site together; therealmofarda.net, which we ran, very successfully unill about 7 months ago.

‘Alayel’ was my fellow co-admin, and, after my rather abrupt exit from the site, decided she fancied a little slice of what I had created, taking my account; Lothlómendil. Arda saw the birth of B.A.D.I and the creation of Sartana by none other than my self, again both of which she has since seized.

But with my leaving and the ensuing chaos, the site was left in too much turmoil; it seems, to have been continued. It was shut down, with my knowledge or consent.

‘Alayel’, it seems, has paid me a little visit to try and even the score.

I must apologise to you all for this intrusion, and hope that I have provided a satisfying answer to any questions you may or may not have had.

Feel free to PM me if there is anything else I can do, or anything you wish to know. This is a very personal issue, one that also exists in real life, so I would appreciate it if you used a little discretion, as this area of my life is still a little sore, more so in light of recent events.

Thank you,
Lothlómendil

treachery?

Mass-PM from Alayel:

Dear Members of Roleplayer's Kingdom,

Your admin, "Lothlómendil" (AKA Broken Wings) needs to receive a message about stealing ideas from other sites. Everything from this board has been stolen from other, more successful boards. The first of which, http://therealmofarda.com/ is large site from where she stole even the admin's username. It is from this site that she also stole the board rules, Dungeon Master Zero and its avatar (which has been now deleted by the original DMZ to stop the theft), the entire concept of BADI from a staff member named Sartana (sound familiar? It should, this name and his smiley were stolen too), and goodness knows what else. Imagine not having the creativity to come up with your own username! It's insultingly disrespectful and shows an incredibly lack of imagination.

But this site isn't the only one where ideas were blatantly ripped. If you take a look at http://role-player.net/ you will notice that this older forum's RP sections match RPK's almost identically. And if you look at her profile on that board, where she was again using Arda's admin's name, she got banned for her theft. Her accounts Broken Wings and Soulreaver on Arda have also been banned for theft. And when contacted on RPK about the theft by the real Lothlómendil so the stolen ideas could be removed, she instead decides to suspend her account and avoid the issue.

Think carefully about participating in a site that was completely ripped from somewhere else, and whether or not you want to be around an admin that would be so deceptive and petty.

a fatal flaw (#3)

All this time and energy spent RPing and thinking about RPs is probably better directed at authoring something alone.

a fatal flaw

I find that I often underestimate the time and effort it takes for my undertakings to materialise into what I want them to be.

now i lay me down to sleep

Don't get too attached to your characters, kids.

But that's now how I wanted to start. I suppose you could say that there are two ways to fairly approach an RP. One is the literate way which is like a round robin where everyone adds to the narrative in a literary fashion. The second way is to treat it as a literal roleplay, and in so doing limiting yourself and your character to his or her standpoint and awareness. While this is not terrible, it motivates some people to bend the story around themselves and their character, and that's just not good reading.

It's because people love their characters too much that they do these things. And it's selfish.

Or it could not be. Characters who click and can play off each other well hit it off and have fun. It's just like kids playing with toys in the schoolyard. And as such, it can turn into a sue-off. Of the Mary-Gary kind.

And that makes me tired and sick.
